SUMMARY:External: Science Centre World Summit 2017
DESCRIPTION:“Around the globe\, the concept of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) is increasingly important in research governance and funding. How this interacts with science communication is therefore very interesting to explore. This session will be hosted by a major European RRI project called NUCLEUS (New Understanding of Communication\, Learning and Engagement in Universities and Scientific Institutions) involving 25 partners from Africa\, Asia and Europe. We will explore what ‘responsible science communication’ means to different stakeholders in different countries and cultures. How do science centres play a role? How does this look around the showcasing of cutting-edge research with significant societal impact or in influencing behaviours or policies? We will encourage exchange of views from different professions\, drawing on six ‘cells’ from our NUCLEUS work: universities/research institutions\, public engagement\, policy\, media\, civil society and economy. We hope the session to influence what a ‘Manifesto for Responsible Science Engagement’ might look like.” \nThe programme will include contributions by NUCLEUS partners Nino Dvalidse (Ilia State University)\, Alexander Gerber (Rhine-Waal University)\, Shadrack Mkansi (South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement) and Kenneth Skeldon (previously University of Aberdeen\, now affiliated with Wellcome Genome Campus). \n

SUMMARY:External: NUCLEUS session at Science in Public Conference 2017
DESCRIPTION:“NUCLEUS: Making upstream mainstream  \nHealthy relationships require open communication and respect for values\, expectations and goals – and the relationship between research and society is no exception. Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) is an approach to research that embraces this shared responsibility throughout the entire R&I process. NUCLEUS is a four-year\, Horizon 2020 project investigating how to make RRI a reality in universities and research institutions. \nWhat institutional barriers prevent research organisations from engaging with their stakeholders to align research with society’s needs? How can these obstacles be overcome? NUCLEUS is a major H2020  project that not only investigates these challenges\, but will also recommend and implement new strategies to tackle them. It is an international\, transdisciplinary consortium of 24 institutions from 15 countries that is developing new ways to help scientific institutions respond to societal needs and challenges. In Europe\, South Africa and China NUCLEUS will establish 30 international test sites to bring RRI to life\, making upstream mainstream.“ \n\nDon’t miss our “NUCLEUS: Making upstream mainstream” session with NUCLEUS partners Peter Broks (Rhine-Waal University)\, Alexander Gerber (Rhine-Waal University) and Caitriona Mordan (Dublin City University)! \nDate and time: Tuesday\, 11 July\, 13:15-14:45\nLocation: Sharman Room \nMore information about the event can be found at the conference website: http://sipsheff17.co.uk/

SUMMARY:Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI): Coming to Grips with a Contentious Concept
DESCRIPTION:Bielefeld University’s Centre for Interdisciplinary Research is hosting a conference to explore the concept of Responsible Research and Innovation in an interdisciplinary and international setting. The programme includes sessions led by NUCLEUS partners Martin Carrier (Bielefeld University)\, Anne Dijkstra (Twente University) and Alexander Gerber (Rhine-Waal University). \nFrom the conference description: \n“The goal of the conference is to explore the notion of “responsible research and innovation” (RRI) in an interdisciplinary and international setting. The concept of RRI has come to the fore in the past decades and can be viewed as a response to the growing public insight that science is a powerful instrument that can bring about valuable and damaging outcome. The wider research context of the proposed conference is a project on RRI within Horizon 2020 (Carrier/König) and a research cooperation with the “South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement” (SAASTA\, Weingart). Three topical areas are supposed to be addressed. “Science for society” is intended to explore how to identify\, choose\, and implement socially beneficial research topics. “Science with society” is supposed to investigate frameworks of lay participation regarding the selection of research fields. “Science communication” is thought to study ways of establishing a dialogue between science and society.”

SUMMARY:Annual EARMA Conference
DESCRIPTION:“It’s no exaggeration to say that European research has taken a seismic blow with the British electorate’s decision to leave the EU. While we will all likely survive and thrive in the future\, there is little doubt that the fundamental nature of the open collaboration between UK researchers and researchers in the rest of the EU and Associated States will change very dramatically… the least important change may be the role of European funding but\, rather\, the restrictions (actual or implied) placed on researchers around their collaborations with current and former colleagues. These restrictions must be resisted; scientific research cannot be bounded by artificial constraints imposed to ‘punish’ or to ‘isolate’ researchers. \nIn many ways this conference will be the first opportunity to explore the implications for European science. \nIt is increasingly clear that simplification has an evil twin\, low success rates. They are inseparable yet the challenge remains to maintain the universal accessibility of H2020 but improve the success rates. The best way to do this may well be to concentrate on ‘Excellent Research’. Is it time to re-examine the idea of research as a public good ‘making the breakthroughs’ in Europe.” \nThe programme will include a speech on RRI by NUCLEUS project lead Alexander Gerber (Rhine-Waal University).
