Ruhr-University of Bochum

The Ruhr-University of Bochum is one of the largest universities in Germany. It is located outside the center of a city seen more as an industrial than a science city – by the inhabitants of Bochum as well as from the outside.

As many enterprises like Opel have left Bochum, there is a structural change taking place. To change Bochum into a science city, the Ruhr-University of Bochum closely cooperates with the city. Therefore, Bochum runs the Blue Square, a building in the City Center, where researchers meet the general public in order to discuss their topics and make them more popular through the development of new formats of scientific communication.

Within the NUCLEUS project, guidelines for Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) are being developed and will be implemented in the growing together of the University and the City of Bochum. At the Ruhr-University of Bochum, an institutionalized Nucleus will function as a testbed for Responsible Research and Innovation.
